The video " A Call to Men" is speaks about the wrong way we determine and expect a men to act and be even though when they are very young. Porter gives us many examples on how he was treating his five years son when he cried. even though his son is only five, he still imposed him to act like a men and don't even bother to comfort but do it when his daugther cry. he explains this is why the men was apolozing to him when crying next to him and that also made him not saying no to his frere when proposed to have sex with a girl older than him. Also this explains why men are violent sometime toward women.
Peter believes that the only way to solve this is to break free of the "man box." He beleives that parents especially male parents are responsible for this. He urges that we have to teach our young boys that it is ok for them to cry, have feeling and be hold. Parents have to be there for them and work with them and that waythey will be treating women better. But they must be free form the "man box."
"killing us Softly" points out how women's body negatively advertised and how it how it is transformed to things. She explains how they reduce women's body and make it look thin and beautiful just to drive young girls who dream about that body crazy about it. However, Kate Winslel refuses Hollywood to dictate her wight and says that " I don't look like that and I don't desire to look like that" when a British Magazine reduce the size of a leg by a third. Thus women, girl don't see it that way. they are taken over by the beautiful body they see on T.V, magazine...
She explains that they dehumanize women by selling the value, the concept of success, love, sexulaity and morality. It affects women's self esteem and it is violent to turn a person's body to a thing or object. She also claims that just like racism, homophobia and terrorism, dehumanizing a person falls in the same hand. A lot of teenage girl are killing themselves just to look like these ads which is fake. Since they can't get that kind body, they mess up they eating habit leading to a eating disorder. The only way to solve this public health problem is to change this environment.
I can relate "A call to Man" to sociolization because we understand families are the primary agent of early sociolization which is the process through which people learn their culture’s basic norms, values, beliefs, and appropriate behaviors. It helps us know who we are, how we act and operate with one another. We learn basic skill within our family and since we have that believe toward men, we teach it to our children. The way they see themselves as loved, smart, creative... depend a lot on their families and that explains why the men didn't want cry next to a men and why Porter treated his son when he cries.
According to chapter 6, media play an increasibngly significant role in the lives of many young people. and children receive lesson nowaday from commercial media compagnies whose primary interest is selling product and socializing young people to be avid consumers. This is exactly what is discuss in " Killing us Softly" with the dehumanization of the human which lead the way young girl want to body to look, their wight and everything else associated with. I see a lot of teenage girl who now have problem of plastic surgery because they were not happy with their body.
In the article the “retro wife” we see that Kelly kino left her job, her career to take care of her husband and her two kids. We also see a couple more examples (Caitlin) of women who also give up work to spend time home with their family. These women believe that home should be more than “a place to watch T.V at the end of the nice” but a place that required a more time that anything else. Unlike feminist, they believe that “a man’s job is to earn money; a woman’s job is to look after the home and family”.
As we can see in “Parent Socialization of children” we also learn that “when parents are more involved and/or have greater expectations of their children’s behavior, children demonstrate better outcomes.” Whether we are in China, South Africa Thailand, and U.S… or anywhere, power, control and support is the style that parents use to assist their children.
These two articles have some similarities that is showing the best way of parenting. Both articles suggest that a good parenting occurs when the parent is involved in an active way that is, not spending all day with them but interacting with the child such reading to them, going to the park or museum, teaching them… just like what Kelly Makino and parents from China… did. Also it implies that authoritative parents achieve better on childrealing than authoritarian and permissive is worst. We can also relate these two articles to the chapter of socialization because these articles teach us how parents participate in children socialization. According to Melvin Kohn, childrearing practice can vary from culture and the article “Parent Socialization of Children gives specific” example of that. Trough this chapter we can understand “retro wife” the norm t, belief that woman should be home to take care of their children and husband and that explains why these women are not into feminism.
I can relate these two article and both video because they are all about socialization. It is all about parenting and how to avoid a lot of anormal facts such as the "man box", the wrong message of the media ( advertissemen)... by applying what is said in these two article.
I can relate to this because my mother live the same way and I believe in that too. When I was younger, my mother stopped her job to spend more time with us. Compare to some of my friend who never spent time with their parents because they never were working, I did better in everything than them. They didn’t know a lot of things and were not socialized. They had problem being with people and expressing their thoughts. Although I believe that men also can take care of their children because my dad did it and he is good at it. Every parent should sacrifice a little of their time to be their children to help them to be better in the society.
socialization of boys and girls.
